“Do you see an object? Any edges? Anything hard? Anything slanted?”
“If light striking the retina is the simplest condition, then the simplest fullest condition would be white light– the simultaneous presentation of the full spectrum of color– striking the entire retina uniformly.”
“The ‘fog’ of pure vision was ‘vaguely surface-like’.”
“One acute observer saw ‘levels of nothingness’.”
“‘natural’ visual perception is never pure.”

Society of Smallness: A Minifesto

Minifesto 2020
Laser print of digitally scanned original handwritten in ink on paper
21.59 x 27.94 cm (8.5 x 11 in.)

In pre-pandemic times, we would have liked the minifesto to be tactile, if somewhat imperceptible. We may have rolled it up into a tiny scroll. Right before parting, after conversing with a friend, we may have leaned in closely to place it directly into the palm of their hand, closing their fingers gently around it with our own and letting our hands linger in this silent clasp for a millisecond.
Alas, the minifesto exists as a downloadable PDF that can make its way into hands, then into the nooks and crannies of building masonry and forlorn sidewalks.

We welcome correspondence—images, insta, email, tweets—of how the minifesto manifests in other parts of the planet.

In this project I recorded the sounds of 3 rooms that I lived in over the course of a year, while I was “by myself” (there are dogs in some of the recordings lol). I manipulated and cut 15 recordings, and layered them into 6 pieces. I created new subtle environments using the sounds that happen around me when it’s quiet. I did this with intentions to work a material that is usually EQ’d out of recordings, something always present and unwanted (usually).

They are field recordings of my rooms. The sounds that happen when i am dissociating, self isolating, in a depressive state etc.

Frans Verschoor: Untitled (1993) & Slowscape #5 (2020)

Twenty-seven years ago I made this work (Untitled, 1993), which measures only 1.5 x 1.5 millimeters. It consists of an image of one of my paintings from 1990, which is exactly a hundred times larger.

Slowscape#5 explores the boundaries of photography, painting and video. Almost imperceptibly, locations from all over the world blend together, creating new, as of yet undiscovered landscapes.
The only constant is the horizon.
Slowscape#5 doesn’t tell a linear story, but could be experienced as an imaginary journey, without a beginning, without an end and without a goal. The viewer can step in or out at any moment; the landscape will flow on, traversing time and space.

Wilma Vissers: Untitled

Untitled, 3 x 2 cm.

Untitled, 7 x 5 x 4,5 cm.

Untitled, 8 x 6 x 4,5 cm.

Works made of scraps of wood and painted with gouache and oil markers.
They come from a series of small mini-artworks that I made to challenge myself.
I wanted to know if I could make something very small,
but with a huge monumental impact.

When I worked on this I realized::
to create space, something small is needed.
